You can’t design a year you haven’t finished.

Most of us move from one year into the next without stopping. The calendar turns, the resolutions get written, and the year we just lived goes unexamined. There’s no question that this costs us something. New goals stacked on an unfinished year rarely hold, and by March most of them have quietly fallen away.

A year leaves marks. It asks things of us that we don’t always notice while we’re giving them. For Black women, that asking is often constant. Work, family, church, and community each depend on what we carry, and we’ve long been expected to carry it without complaint and without pause.

The changes of the last year arrived quickly, as they always do, and most of us haven’t had a chance to take stock of them. This guide makes room for that. Seven questions ask what 2026 required of you, what you’ve been holding that was never yours, and what the year proved you’re capable of. Each one ends with a single move — something to decide, to release, or to claim.

The seven questions

  1. What’s heavy right now?
  2. What are you carrying that was never yours to hold?
  3. What work did you do this year that no one saw — but that held everything together?
  4. What do you need that hasn’t had room yet?
  5. What did 2026 prove you’re capable of?
  6. What will you change to make room for what’s next?
  7. A year from now, what’s different — because you decided it would be?

The guide also includes a page for naming what you’re setting down, and a final page that gathers your answers in one place. That’s the page to keep somewhere you’ll see it in January.

What you’ll leave with

A finished year

An honest review of 2026 — the accomplishments you never stopped to acknowledge, and the lessons you paid full price to learn.

A lighter load

Clarity about what was never yours to carry, and one practical way to begin setting it down.

A place to begin

Evidence of your own capability, and the first outline of the year you intend to build.

I’ve spent twenty-five years in schools and organizations, and in that time I kept meeting the same woman. She was leading everywhere and belonging nowhere. She was holding work no one could see, and being praised for her strength rather than asked what she needed. Often enough, she was me.

Sistahsphere exists for her. It’s a leadership and community ecosystem for Black women, built on the understanding that connection is essential to our health and that thriving is something we do together. This guide is where that work begins.
